Eros victorious in epic Challenge Cup Final

Top Flintshire club Eros (at -11) met Division 2’s Connah’s Quay for a mammoth battle, with Eros having to make 19 points to reach Connah’s Quay’s +8 handicap. First and second mixed drew 1:1 and victory went to Eros in third and fourth mixed by only a few points in each game. Emma Paton and Aarthy Aravind had a convincing win over Eros’s first women and with both men’s resulting in a draw the match ended 10:6 with the Challenge Cup going to Eros.

In the Plate, closely matched Rossett and Buckley, met for the third time this season. At the end of the mixed doubles the match was neck and neck 4:4. Rossett’s Sue Lord, Nicola Smith, Emma Hilton and Jane Liddle took all four games in women’s and in the men’s Buckley’s Steve Eltham, Rob Bishop, Ben Betts and Callum Sant took all four games. At 8:8 the winners were decided on points. The Plate went to Buckley who beat Rossett by 20 points (278:258).

It’s been a fantastic tournament and all of the games through the Cup have been played in great spirit. It’s good to be back and see badminton thriving again.

Gold for Oates and Font at the Nationals

NEWBL was well represented in the Welsh Nationals at the weekend and two of our stars reached the finals on Sunday. First up were No 1 seeds Andy Oates and partner Saffron Morris who played a brilliant, entertaining game against second seeds Kitching and Permatasari winning 21-17, 15-21, 21-13. Dan Font was on top form all weekend, reaching the singles final with ease to eventually beat No 1 seed Archie Bult 21-14, 21-7. In the men’s doubles Dan and his partner William Kitching won the final 21-15, 21-5. Congratulations both.
Honorable mention goes to semi finalists Scott Oates and his partner Aimee (XD), Jamie Noble (Eros) and Luke Tanner (MD) and Ellen Liddle (Eros) and her partner Terrie Dalton who won through to the women’s doubles semi finals, especially as Terrie only had her baby 3 months ago!

Great turnout of NEWBL seniors at Great Orme Open Doubles

NEWBL Challenge Cup – First Round

The NEWBL Challenge Cup first round was completed last week with a mixed bag of results. Denbigh v Llanferres A and Prestatyn A vs Flint Phoenix were pretty close matches overall. In other matches there were some really close, high scoring games which weren’t reflected in the final scores.  Results below.
The NEWBL Cup Committee have confirmed their offer to review handicaps after the first round. It’s the first full season after the long break, there has been a large migration of players from one club to another, some clubs have lost key players, others have gained. They’ve contacted all clubs to request updates of ranked players and those out through injury.
The draw for the next round w/c 5 December is:
Cup
Llanferres A v Llanferres B
Eros v Denbigh
Hawarden v Holywell
Flint Phoenix v Connah’s Quay
Plate
Llanferres C v Rossett
Llanferres D v Buckley
Prestatyn B v Prestatyn A
